The guiding influence at Kodokan is Masatake Sumi Sensei, 8th Dan Hanshi, Professor of Physical Education at Fukuoka University of Education, Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan. A Highly respected International Kendo Master, who annually leads the famous "Kodokan Kendo Seminar"

Jumpei Matsumoto 7th Dan Kyoshi chief National Kendo Coach for the British Kendo Association: 2007 to 2009, first visited the UK 25 years ago. An outstanding Kendo teacher with over 40 years of experience.

The Kancho at Kodokan is Paul Budden (7th Dan Renshi). Paul has a Level 2 award in Coaching Studies from the University of Gloucester and is a registered international Coach. He is also the author of Looking at a Far Mountain : A Study of Kendo Kata, was a member of the British team that won Bronze in Malmo '87 and trained in Japan. Currently he is a Championship Co-ordinator for the European Kendo Federation and was the Controller at the 'now acclaimed' 12th World Championships in Glasgow 2003. Paul was also advisor to the LEGO® Star Wars™ Fireworks Event 2008 for ‘Jedi training activities’ and kendo coach to the celebrities on Channel 4's 'the Game
